Desktop series features FireWire

As far as other upcoming hard disc technologies are concerned, the Triple Interface professional model from Iomega Silver Desktop series features FireWire 800, FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 connections and will be available in 320 GB, 500 GB & 750 GB capacities. These drives come with additional automatic backup & disaster recovery software. Then there are storage disks like LaCie’s Brick desktop hard drives, which are not only high on capacity, but are available in red, white & blue, and can be stacked one atop the other for a fun and decorative touch. Pexagon’s Store-IT hard drive will also offer an EZ-Touch One Button Backup system with Retrospect Express software, which allows file transfer and backup from one or more computers with press of button.

The break-through technology in storage will be based on Nanotechnology, based on exotic technologies with larger memory & faster response time. Ferroelectric RAM (FRAM) will evolve and may be available as MRAM, or magnetic RAM, where data will be stored not electrically but magnetically. This will find its place in computers, digital cameras & PDAs as it can preserve data even after systems are switched off. Other sweeping technologies will be the development of the 3D architectures for memory, where data are stored not just horizontally in flat chips, but also are crammed vertically. Khurana emphasises, “Home segment is outpacing business now, because of the different kind of lifestyle and more digital content, which is leading to emergence of devices that will be beneficial to the consumer.”

Storage solutions in coming days will not be just about keeping your valuable data safe & secure but also helping your information & media to become as accessible and flexible as needed. The content will be with the owner wherever one goes – be it in a car, on trips or even in the gym. That in itself has the potential to enable many more technological revolutions in the coming time.

CHIPS THAT NEVER GO DOWN

In 2008, AMD’s Puma will tussle with Intel’s Nano Nehlahem

With computers forming an integral part of our functioning, the need for best-in-class technology to enhance our performance is felt the most. And when we talk about performance, we talk about architecture and speed – the semi-conductor processor chip which incorporates the function of a CPU on a single integrated circuit. So there’s Intel and there’s AMD which form the almost perfectly duopolic market as far as these chips are concerned.

And what are Intel & AMD doing to take competition to newer highs? “In the year 2008, AMD will come up with a next-generation computing,” replies a confident Vamsi Krishna, Senior Technical Manager, AMD India. Codenamed ‘Puma’, the next-gen notebook processor, matched with the new-generation AMD RS780 mobile chipset will deliver higher battery life and better video processing.

If this is the news from the AMD camp, Intel is not sitting idle either. So what’s Intel’s answer to AMD’s claim to fame? Well, the chip-maker will soon become the first to enter into commercial production of the ‘45-nanometer’ technology (also called the ‘Nehlahem’ architecture) which is by far the most dramatic act in the production of semiconductors in four decades; giving birth to faster chips that would consume lesser power and reduce production costs as well. So, how does AMD respond to this rebound from Intel’s court? “We also plan to begin producing chips on the 45-nanometer process by 2008,” retorts Vamsi. And if that happens, the ‘Puma’ will have a unique power feature which will allow its users to run a discrete graphics card when powered from the main switch and an integrated one when on-battery power. Moreover, graphics will get better which will also give the system a completely a new look as Vamsi confidently adds, “Our design will be focussed on performance deliver per watt. AMD is the smart choice across all segments in the industry.” Clearly, the new offerings from AMD will have more performance and efficiency advantage over the previous offerings but Intel with its virtual dominance of the sector (with a 76% market share in semiconductor chips during Q3 2007, as compared to AMD’s 26%) will not allow any other chip maker to take the lead in developing a new technology and taking the next big leap in chip-making as Craig Barrett says, “Intel through its world ahead program, remains focused on accelerating access to technology and increasing internet connectivity...” Intel is also coming up with the ‘Montevina’ platform based on the chip ‘Penryn’ dual-core processors in 2008 which will feature next generation data manageability and security features in several core combinations.

The most interesting news for all is that despite these advanced platforms in place, they will ultimately be quite affordable. Now that’s an interesting piece of information, isn’t it? Technology does bridge the divide ultimately!

Valuations are cheap

Certainly, the short-term scenario appears to be gloomy and all one can do is wait for some light to brighten up the situation. In the long run, however, the sector seems to be on a high tide. According to a recent McKinsey report, the total AUM is expected to grow at around 33% year-on-year from $92 billion in March 2007 to $350-$440 billion by 2012. In fact according to industry experts the current scenario happens to an ideal time to move in for the kill. “We would advise customers to come to markets at this point in time as valuations are cheap and to beat the market volatility they can opt for SIP or STP,” Bandhopadhyay tells 4Ps B&M. “Though the near-term headwinds are strong for equities as an asset class, we firmly believe that investing in this asset class, through professionally managed avenues like Mutual Funds and PMS schemes, would churn out above average returns for investors over the long-term,” agrees Hitesh Agrawal, the Head of Research for Angel Broking.

So, while all asset classes and segments are expected to contribute significantly to the industry’s growth, retail mutual funds (expected to grow at a CAGR of 36-42% annually taking the total AUM from $36 billion in 2007 to $160-$200 billion in 2012) and portfolio management services happen to be the key drivers of profitability for AMCs. In fact, dedicated infrastructure funds and real estate mutual funds are two promising areas where the real opportunity lies for the Indian asset management market. Moreover, with the growing popularity of commodity trading in two of India’s commodity exchanges, MCX and NCDEX, the country appears to be ready for commodity-traded funds, thereby creating an altogether new market for the mutual funds sector.

Certainly, these are interesting times for mutual fund players. The sea of changes in the financial and economic scenario is bringing in a fresh wave of opportunities for the long run. But as always, with the industry’s expansion, increased challenges and growing competition will make it difficult for the smaller players to survive, leading to a wave of consolidation to knock on the doors. But as the economic growth in India swells, and wallets and regulators ease the reins further, asset management companies are bound to prosper. The only thing that they need to focus on is to get back to their boardrooms, scratch their heads and come up with a few effective answers to emerging challenges. Opportunities are huge, and some quick on-their-feet thinking can easily send Indian mutual fund players soaring upwards, to find their rightful place, under the global financial markets Sun!

Green gremlin attacks!

Why Nokia is a happy phone-maker; thanks to environmental issues

“Nokia’s market share has dipped from the previous quarter to 39.1% in first quarter 2008...” is how Dirk Hayden Lewis, Gartner explains the volatile global market share predicament for Nokia. However, this is not the real worry for the Finnish giant as its market share figure has actually improved from 35.5% a year back (during Q1 FY07). So what’s bothering it now? Well, Greenpeace (an NGO which ranks electronics companies primarily based on toxic chemicals use and e-waste regulations) has ranked Nokia a shameful 9th for the year 2007 after a glorious 1st in 2006. So is the giant speechlessly stumped?

If you knew what Nokia is capable of digging out, you’d not be surprised to discover that there’s more to this Finn that just being a master-basker in the glory of being hailed as the ‘prime authority’ in mobile manufacturing? And it has an answer to the problem at hand – Green phones (what?!?)! The company has announced a roll-out of about 40 new green mobile phone models this year in India (its first in the world). The ‘green’ mobile will be composed of biodegradable materials like polylactic acid plastics which are easily recyclable (instead of toxic & environment polluting materials like lithium and cadmium). The main objective of this recycling process is to demonstrate the company’s dedication to saving the environment and therefore reduce usage of environmentally harmful raw materials during production. The company also declared that all its forthcoming will be composed of biodegradable covers and recyclable battery designs and that it would reduce power consumption of mobile handset chargers by upto 50% by 2010 – some effort to rise up the ‘environmentally sensitive’ ranks! And if you thought these were mere promises, Nokia has already launched its first bio-degradable and eco-friendly ‘Green Mobile’ phone, the Nokia 3110 which is 65% recyclable.

A global versus a local ?

There is a huge legacy behind that ‘S’ logo you see on the grill of that omnipresent Swift. This is the same piece de resistance adorning the bulging, yet classy tank of that elusive Hayabusa GSX R1300, one of the most powerful street bikes ever! The ‘S’ sign is a symbol of raw power, virility, waiting to be unleashed at a throttle’s notice and is indeed coveted. With such a potent definition, this explosive logo has a brand image which is hard to match when it comes to the ‘must have list for men’; and evidently, Suzuki is proud of its testosterone inducing moniker.

Interestingly, the same logo finds itself globally on Suzuki’s cars as well (which, however, are not perceived in the same league as the bikes); but not in India! Maruti, which is Suzuki’s Indian four wheeler operation and arguably the largest, until recently, had quite resiliently used its own version of Suzuki’s logo. Though the dual-winged logo was the centre piece on the Marutis of yore, now the sign of ‘S’ is back with a vengeance. With a 54% controlling stake, Suzuki now wants its coveted logo to do the honours on Maruti’s vehicles in India; and this is highly visible now. “All questions relating to branding and logos depend on brand image and how you want to use it. Different brands are used for different markets. The company in India has always been branded as Maruti Suzuki, and here, it has become a very strong brand,” said R.C. Bhargava, Chairman Maruti Suzuki, to 4Ps B&M while speaking on the topic of the ‘S’igns. Considering the growing ‘eminence grise’, as a company, Maruti is indeed changing, and the Japanese way of things is more than evident.

Considering cost benefits and unsurpassed market knowledge, Suzuki understands its paragon position in India and like any other effective strategy, would like to leverage this to full potential. But critically, Suzuki should realise that Maruti Suzuki will be under heavy shelling from the competition, whether it likes it or not. And it’s not just projects like Tata’s 1-lakh car that we’re talking about; even companies like Renault/Nissan and Bajaj already have their small car planned (the highly secretive ULC project)! Maruti’s small cars will suddenly find themselves competing against above of 1,000,000 units unleashed into the market against them (combined capacity of the mini cars of these new players). The only solution, according to industry experts, is capacity utilisation and if need be, ‘export oriented’ expansion.
