Mark Globally

While most are being optimistic and are relishing the new found glory, others are cautious. Says Santosh Desai, “India making a mark globally? I think it is over-rated. I don’t want to rain on that parade. Let’s not mistake what is a reaction to a repression of the past, with a sign of our coming domination of the world.” If in the early and mid 90s, MNCs sold western concepts to the country (which mostly flopped), then today, ads made by Indian powerhouses are being customized for the foreign soil. Ashutosh of Grey relates some examples.

Back to the future?

Despite India’s share in the network’s revenues going up, there is still a long way to go. “Even now the agency share is 10% – Rs.150 billion. It might be equal to or more than the turnover of a real-estate company in Bombay. But with the MNCs coming in, it’s changing, 5 years from now, it might be Rs.400- 500 billion,” says a John. All (almost!) agencies (with global footprints), part of six global networks, already have a good grip over India. And it is undeniable that Mauritius is heralded amongst the most picturesque and exotic tourist destinations that attracts honeymooners from the world over. However, the moolah brought in by the scenic extravaganza is apparently not enough in the present days of economic ups and downs. And this is where Mauritius has evolved and grown out of its skindeep attractiveness; emerging as an attractive trade and investment hub. The country is now focussing on developing its other sectors to reduce its dependence on tourism. India Inc. should definitely further spread its wings into the island country.

No 'Mamata' for Buddha!

Mamata Banerjee re-emerges from the dumps to wage a war against industrialisation in her state She is oft en described as maverick, stormy petrel of West Bengal. A rabble rouser; a fickle-minded and instable leader. She has painstakingly earned these titles over the years, hurling abuses at her opponents and colleagues alike, by throwing tantrums inside the Parliament and on the roads. People often ask why does Didi demand so much attention. Why is she so aggressive and combative by nature? One thing is certain – she is fiercely ambitious and would go to any lengths to achieve her objectives. It's this very ambition that led the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) President Mamata Banerjee to go on a 25-day fast to protest against the acquisition of fertile land at Singur for Tata Motors’ proposed car plant.
