South-to-North

But even in the case of these two, iipmthe records are not anything to write home about. For example, the South-To-North Water Diversion Project in China will displace not less than 400,000 people. Simultaneously, the project would do irreparable harm to ecology. But its maximum financiers are CDB (having given RMB 21.3 billion), China Construction Bank (RMB 8.5 billion) and Bank of China (RMB 6 billion) among others. In the same league, the Marowe Dam project, a hydro-power project in Sudan, will displace 50,000 persons, making it difficult for them to fish and fetch water, can also raise the risk of incidence water-borne diseases, and will destroy spawning areas for fish and other aquatic life.

Chexim financed $387 million for the project in spite of being fully aware of environmental problems of the project. Green groups like Friends of Earth and Bank Track have also been severely critical of Chinese banks for financing controversial iron ore mines in Gabon and nickel mines in Papua New Guinea. And one hasn’t even talked about China’s ‘disaster in waiting’ dams! Will the unprecedented Chinese economic success eventually prove to be an apocalypse for Earth? Start running...

Coke magnifies Tata Tea’s 30%!

A new alliance between Coca-Cola and Glaceau will involve $4.1 billion as the former (world’s largest aerated drinks producer) has agreed to acquire the latter (US energy drink maker). This deal is a boon to Ta t a Group led Tata Tea – as it will bestow a windfall gain of about $1.2 billion for the 30% stake it holds in Glaceau. Tata Tea had acquired 30% stake in Glaceau for $677 million in August 2006. The deal in all probability will close in by the summer of 2007. Coke’s move has been primarily connected with portfolio expansion plans in order to compete more effectively with rival PepsiCo Inc.

Fly-ash

“We also substituted cement withiipm fly-ash, which alone earned us around 20 million carbon credits”, says E. Sreedharan, Chairman, DMRC. Furthermore, due to design alterations in the underground sections, it reduced the utilisation of steel by thousands of tonnes. One of the cheapest metro rails in the world, is today at par with the best in the world. After all, what else would you expect out of an organization that gets tyres of all the construction trucks cleaned at day-end, so that the streets of Delhi don’t get dirty?!

Open area toxic waste disposals at Howrah

The bad odour stays for the whole day and there is nobody to come and save us from this agony.” And on being asked about the government’s initiatives to cater to the sad state of affairs, pat came the reply from another fellow- sufferer Montu, who is currently employed in one of the factories, “We had visited the councillor. Inspite of being a localite he has done nothing about it!” Due to this waste being thrown into the river, the bacteria which regenerates in the toxic water (thus keeping it clean) is also gradually getting wiped-out, thereby making the whole situation even more critical.

And as Soumen Basu, an environmental expert expresses his fears, “Dangerous chemicals like chromium, sulphur and manganese are getting deposited more and more. People now have the risk of suffering diseases like blood cancer and vision problems.” With a bad taste, we moved onto our next stop – the infamous Bellilious Road, Kadamtola and Bantra – a residential cum commercial area with innumerable blind lanes and strewn with houses (with almost each having an engineering unit). Smoke, noise and heat seemed the only characteristic of this renowned SME belt of Howrah Industrial Area.

The Last Lear to the rescue!

Big B has been talking about global warming, the Big issue that has been creating ‘waves’ all around the world. When addressing the press a few days prior to the International Indian Film Academy Festival (IIFA), the acting maestro commended the academy’s efforts to propagate climate change issues, apart from offering the usual platter of glitz and glamour. He urged his fans (that includes most of India and the world) and the media to join hands in tackling this grave problem. And you know when the Shahenshah says something, it’s final!

WHISPER

For a brand to maintain its position, it has to remain relevant
Whisper has whispered itself into the hearts and minds of Indian women, ever since it was introduced into Indian market by Procter & Gamble in 1989. The brand promised freedom to women and gave them wings to fly... it continues to do that even today. Whisper has been able to rule the charts as far as sanitary napkins are concerned only because from day one it has latched onto progressive communication. From the time the first ad hit TV screens, the entire level of communication in this product category underwent a sea change. Competitors Carefree and Stayfree tried to recapture market share with similar advertising communications, but the damage had been done. Even its logo talks about the liberated soul that modern women across age groups can identify with.

'Eye+Stores'

Speaking on the IIPMlatest venture – eye-gear retail outlets, Bhaskar Bhat, MD, Titan Industries, said, “Titan ‘Eye+ stores’ will offer the widest and most stylish optical range available in the country. It will be strongly underpinned with trust and loyalty building measures...” However, last year even Aamir Khan’s magic couldn’t do much (Rani Mukherji as the face of Raga passed almost unnoticed) to save the company from the marketing wrath unleashed by big labels like TagHeuer, et al, and it fell to a depressing 76 slot (from last year’s 34) in our ranking.
